Ok after reading today's newspaper about the TIRZ thing and about Potter county want's to only pay their fair share, I have to ask this?
Why the hell is everyone so concerned about making downtown Amarillo into downtown big city America.

Why is so much of my hard earn money being used to rebuild a crumbling part of this town? Amarillo is doing fine, and downtown is just what it is. Why not tell big businesses to come in and rebuild it and rename the part they build after their product, like they do in big cities. ie-American Airlines Center and Smirnof Center in Dallas!

And do you guys really think that Amarillo citizens will support another ballpark. They barely support the one they have at the fairgrounds. Another waste of my money, and everyone else in Amarillo too!

Why don't we spend that money fixing the streets, or helping fix the problems with the fire dept being short handed.

I'm just so tired of hearing all this crap being done by our beloved city commissioners. They don't even want to ask our opinion, and want to just issue bonds and do whatever they want and pass along a new tax to us anyways.

I for one am tired of wasting my money on bad ideas that the elite of Amarillo want!

You obviously don't understand how it works.  Sure, some sharing of power
is always nice, but unless you've gone and put your private money
into downtown renovations, you haven't spent a dime.
Them 'big cities' give enormous tax breaks if that's what you're talking about (including
victory park/ american airlines center.) But no money is spent on a
TIRZ, a small portion of increased property taxes (due to investment)
is rebated. NOTHING IS SPENT.
Commissioners ask for opinions all the
time, but it's not up to Jay Ricci or Amanda Goodman to yank you off
your couch and drag you by an ear to the meetings.
Just do a little
research before you rant. It may save you some embarrassment.
And
by the way, them-there 'big cities' are miles ahead in the area of
creating a vibrant downtown, adding culture, creating urban living
environments, and forming an identity of a proud, vibrant city.

they are trying to create tat 90's yuppie lifestyle in downtown. it will never
work here. this is west Texas and people just don't like like that in Amarillo.
trying to build $300.000 condos in downtown Amarillo is just a waste of money.
the city council needs to quit living this dream of a downtown utopia in
Amarillo.

The establishment of the TIRZ led directly to the new hotel in the Fisk
building. That hotel will generate much needed revenue for the city. Some folks
need to scrape the moss off their imaginations and stop living like rats in the
ruins.

It's time for a regime change here in our little berg. It's time for a blue
collar working guy to take the lead.
Wasted Money   |06-23-08
Spending money on downtown Amarillo is a waste of money. They will end up
spending millions and after about 20 years it will just go back to the homeless
slums and vacant buildings that it is now.
Face the facts, Amarillo is a car
town. People like to drive here. They don't live in an apartment without a car
and use the train or subway to get around like in the big cities. Amarillo is a
spread out suburban lifestyle. Folks like owning homes with a yard away from the
tall buildings.
I would rather see them tear down chunks of the downtown area
for a new coliseum or museum. Things that do get used. The ball park is a good
idea too, but unless they can get the fans in the stands it would be a waste in
my opinion too. Wasting the space by keeping the few old buildings that are
there, just for historical value is silly. You can't just keep everything unless
you want to keep doing what we have now and everything keeps moving to the
southwest part of town and downtown gets left behind.

Today's paper says that Courtyard is going to put a hotel in teh Fisk building
downtown.

Oh and I forgot. Our friggin mayor is just as bad as that f***ing Hillary. Rich,
arrogant and just keeps pushing shit like this an tries to make it look like
it's for the good of everyone. I'm tired of living in a wellfare system that
steals from the hard working middle class and gives to the poor and the rich.
It's not the rich that are paying for this shit. No it's the middle class that
pay taxes and then they use that tax for their own means!

I get tired of hearing that the damn city doesn't have any money to do this or
to do that. Oh ok, lets take some of the money we do have coming in and build a
ballpark in downtown Damarillo. If you can't pay for streets and sewers for new
housing developments, then who do you think will be paying to see baseball in
that new park. The people that live here already don't visit the ballpark we
have. Ok let build a new fancy one downtown so that the f***ing junior leagers
have a nicer place to sit and watch the ball game. Because that is waht it's
for. All those snobby rich jackoffs that run this city in the first place. They
just want to make you pay for it.
KLH   |08-02-07
I moved here from Dallas. I grew up here. I think you must realize that if you
evest your MONEY in type A bonds you will recieve about twice as much WITH no
interst to pay on your savings. This is a good opertunity for you...I cannot
belive you do not see the advantage of Downtown. Why should all the cool stuff
be on the Southside? Also after years in Dallas we donnot want to bread crime
and keep the area vacant. Other people who are older would like to see the
History come back. Let me quess? You do not make much money or you feel cheated
somehow. Use the resources for yourself and hang in there. I know how Amarillo
can be. KLH.
Guest   |08-13-07
Hey KLH, you say you both moved here from Dallas, but you also grew up here.
Which is it.
There really isn't all that much on the Southside.
And as far
as spending money on downtown.
Yeah, they will spend millions and give it to
all those businesses that will turn around and move out when the money and free
taxes expires. Amarillo is not Dallas, and will never be like Dallas. Why do you
people keep hope that Amarillo will all of a sudden blossom into a Dallas and
all of a sudden have millions of residents and all the lifestyle of Dallas. If
that ever happened here, oh my god would this city fall apart. They couldn't
handle the rush of all the people and growth. Give up the dreams man and come
back to reality.

And to Josh, you are right dude, they are going to do the
bond thing without a vote of the public. That is bs man. I know my votes won't
help re-elect them next time. And a ballpark in downtown Amarillo. You are
right, they don't even really care about the ballpark at the fairgrounds that is
alreay there. Let me gues, it's the "bread" crime that KLH is talking
about over there. All those people by the fairgrounds are out to rape and murder
anyone that crosses their turf. Damn I amuse myself.

I agree and disagree here. I think having a nice downtown with clubs and
restaurants and a real entertainment scene would be awesome. But lets fact the
facts. Our city hall folks are only out to draw more business into Amarillo and
think that if they build up this fancy suburban style life in downtown that the
businesses will just flock to the city. Amarillo will not supprt a music scene
and the local gang-wannabe little shits would just tear up and ruin anything
nice that would be down there. Then it would just fall back into the ruin that
it is now. I agree that the money should be spent on things like streets and
such. But they always seem to cater to the southwest part of town where all
those with the money are at. They don't seem to care about those of us taht
can't afford the $250000 houses over there. They leave us with the potholes and
trash like always.
There are too many in Amarillo with bigger dreams than the
pocket books of the city can handle. They all want money to be spent here and
there. Maybe they should take a bit of that money and reinvest it into what is
already here. Don't build a new ballpark. Give a few thousand to the one at the
fairgrounds to fix up a few things and make it a place where people want to go
and see a game. Take a few thousand and fix up the fire dept buildings that are
falling apart and then save a bit and over time you could use to build a few new...

like it or not, amarillo will grow.so just kick back, pop open a cold beer, and
enjoy life.
Don Koopman   |09-26-07
Here's the thing. The TIRZ will only raise funds from the increased value of
downtown improvement. Right now downtown is a rancid carcass. At this pace it
will be a vacant lot. The Potter County commissioners will be rulers of a vacant
lot.
